Product Overview

Finned Tube Heat Exchangers are designed for gas-to-liquid and air-to-air heat transfer applications where increased external heat transfer surface area is required within a defined equipment footprint.

The construction consists of base tubes combined with metallic fins using high-frequency resistance welding, mechanical tension winding, or extruded bimetallic construction. The fin configuration, tube material, fin material, tube diameter, fin pitch, and circuit arrangement are selected according to the required heat duty, operating temperature, pressure, fluid properties, and available installation space.

Typical applications include industrial air cooling, waste heat recovery, process cooling, refrigeration systems, dry coolers, and other thermal management equipment.

Depending on the selected construction and materials, the product range can be configured for operating temperatures up to 600 degrees C and design pressures up to 15.0 MPa. Final pressure and temperature ratings are determined by the tube material, tube dimensions, connection design, fin construction, and applicable design conditions.

Product Configuration & Construction

The heat exchanger is configured according to the required thermal duty, operating environment, mechanical loading, and installation conditions.

Tube-Fin Construction

High-Frequency Resistance Welded (HFRW) Fins: Metallic fins are continuously welded to the base tube to provide a direct tube-fin connection. Carbon steel and stainless steel constructions can be selected for elevated-temperature industrial applications.
Extruded Bimetallic Tubes: An aluminum outer fin structure is mechanically bonded to an inner carbon steel or copper tube. This construction provides an aluminum fin surface with a mechanically integrated base tube.
L-Foot Fins: Metallic strip fins are tension-wound around the tube with the fin foot positioned against the tube surface. This construction is commonly used for standard air-cooled and HVAC applications.
Knurled Tension-Wound Fins: The tube surface is prepared with knurling before fin winding to improve mechanical engagement between the fin foot and tube surface.

Selection Guidance: The appropriate fin construction depends on operating temperature, corrosion conditions, thermal expansion, required mechanical strength, and project cost requirements.

Tube and Fin Arrangement :Tube bundles can be configured with staggered or inline tube arrangements and triangular or square pitch patterns. Fin pitch and tube spacing are selected according to the required heat transfer area and allowable air-side pressure drop.

Headers and Casing

Headers: Manufactured from carbon steel, stainless steel, or other specified materials according to the working medium and project requirements.
Casing and Support: Configured with tube support sheets, intermediate supports, protective frames, and service access arrangements according to bundle size and installation requirements.

Air-Cooled Heat Exchangers (ACHE):

Process cooling systems where ambient air is used as the secondary cooling medium in plants with limited cooling-water availability.

Gas Turbine Air Cooling:

Integrated into air-cooling systems using chilled water or refrigerant circuits to reduce ambient air temperature and restore turbine power output.

Refrigeration and Chilled Water Systems:

Condensers, evaporators, dry coolers, and other air-side heat transfer equipment in industrial installations.

Manufacturing & Quality Control

Manufacturing and inspection procedures are selected according to material combinations, pressure classes, operating temperatures, and project specifications.
Raw Material Verification: Incoming tube and fin materials are checked against specified material grades. Positive Material Identification (PMI) testing can be arranged for applicable projects.
Fin Winding and Welding: High-frequency welding and mechanical fin-winding processes are controlled via monitoring parameters such as welding power, feed speed, and forming conditions.
Pressure and Leak Testing: Pressure-containing components are subjected to hydrostatic pressure testing at specified test pressures. Pneumatic leak testing is used for selected low-pressure applications where appropriate.
Non-Destructive Examination (NDE): Eddy current testing, ultrasonic testing, or other NDE methods can be arranged for critical tube materials.
Documentation Packages: Include material certificates, inspection records, pressure test reports, weld documentation, and dimensional inspection records.

FAQ

Q: How do I select the appropriate finned tube construction?

A: Selection depends primarily on operating temperature, pressure, thermal expansion, corrosion conditions, and required mechanical strength. High-frequency welded construction is suited for direct tube-fin connections and elevated-temperature service. L-foot and tension-wound constructions serve standard HVAC applications, while extruded bimetallic construction provides an aluminum fin surface combined with a mechanically integrated base tube.

Q: What information is required for heat exchanger sizing?

A: For thermal sizing and quotation, please provide:
Tube-side and air-side fluid types and flow rates
Inlet and outlet temperatures
Operating and design pressure
Allowable pressure drop and required heat duty
Fluid composition, corrosivity, and fouling conditions
Maximum available length, width, and height limitations

Q: Can the heat exchanger be designed for high-temperature applications?

A: Yes. Selected finned tube constructions can operate up to 600 degrees C. However, the maximum allowable temperature depends on tube material, fin material, thermal expansion, and connection design. Assemblies nearing 600 degrees C are evaluated on complete thermal profiles rather than nominal fin ratings alone.

Q: Can you provide custom header and connection configurations?

A: Yes. Header dimensions, connection positions, flange standards, removable covers, and casing dimensions can be customized according to your installation and maintenance specifications upon submission of drawing constraints.

Q: Can the heat exchanger be supplied for corrosive or outdoor environments?

A: Yes. Materials and coatings can be adapted using stainless steel, cupronickel, titanium, or specialized protective systems. Fluid composition and external environmental data should be provided prior to material selection for seawater, exhaust, or offshore installations.

Q: What documents can be supplied with a customized heat exchanger?

A: Depending on project scope, documentation packages can include dimensional drawings, material certificates, thermal calculation data, pressure test records, NDE reports, and manufacturing records confirmed during the engineering review stage.
